WMRMC Sleep Lab Earns Zero-Deficiency ACHC Accreditation

What a Zero-Deficiency Survey Means, and Why Our Sleep Lab Earned It

WMRMC Sleep Lab Earns Zero-Deficiency ACHC Accreditation

Picture this: It has been months since you woke up feeling truly rested. You drag through the afternoon, you nod off in front of the TV, and your spouse has started mentioning that you snore loudly, or worse, that you seem to stop breathing for a few seconds at a time. Your doctor recommends a sleep study.

Now you are facing a night in an unfamiliar room, with sensors attached and a technician watching over you while you sleep. It is natural to feel a little uneasy. You want to know that the people running the test know exactly what they are doing, that the equipment is right, and that your results will be accurate enough to actually help you.

Most of us can't inspect a sleep lab for ourselves. So how can you know, by an objective measure, that the one down the road is done right? That is exactly what accreditation is for. And right here in the White Mountains, our Sleep Lab just passed that test with a perfect score.

Understanding How Sleep Labs Are Accredited

The Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC) is a national, independent organization that evaluates health care providers against detailed quality and safety standards. For sleep labs, those standards cover everything from how studies are performed and scored to how staff are trained and supervised, how equipment is maintained, and how patient safety is protected.

During an accreditation survey, ACHC surveyors come on site and review the lab's policies, records, and day-to-day practices. Any standard the lab does not fully meet is written up as a deficiency. According to ACHC, each deficiency must be addressed through a formal Plan of Correction before the lab's final accreditation status is decided.

Zero Deficiencies: A Perfect Survey

Here is what makes this result stand out. ACHC itself notes that nearly all organizations surveyed for accreditation are cited for deficiencies. Finding a few areas to improve is the normal outcome, even for good programs.

Sleep labs in particular face a demanding set of standards. Sleep Review magazine reported that in one recent survey year, more than 10% of sleep centers fell short on nine separate ACHC standards. The magazine also pointed out that smaller labs often have the hardest time, because they lack the large support departments that bigger facilities rely on.

White Mountain Regional Medical Center's Sleep Lab completed its ACHC survey with zero deficiencies. Every standard was met. No corrections were needed. That is not the result of one good day; it reflects consistent, careful work by our team every single day.

Our Sleep Lab is just one part of what we offer. WMRMC provides a full range of specialty and primary care services, right here in the White Mountains.

What This Means for You

A sleep study is only as good as the lab that performs it. Accurate testing is the foundation for diagnosing conditions like sleep apnea and getting you on the right treatment. Untreated sleep problems can affect your energy, your mood, your heart health, and your safety on the road.

For our community, this result means you don't have to travel hours to get a sleep study you can trust. Our Sleep Lab offers overnight in-lab sleep studies, in-lab studies with CPAP therapy, and home sleep testing, all available with a physician's order. Talk to your provider about whether a sleep study is right for you.

We are incredibly proud of our Sleep Lab team. Their hard work, attention to detail, and unwavering focus on patient safety made this recognition possible. Please join us in congratulating them on a job well done!
