Picture this: You or a loved one are sitting in a hospital room. The environment is unfamiliar, the medical terminology is confusing, and you are feeling more than a little vulnerable. Then, a nurse walks in. She pulls up a chair, checks in on how you are holding up, and asks what questions are weighing on your mind. She takes the time to break down your treatment plan into plain language. Suddenly, the room does not feel so overwhelming.
That's the kind of care we want to tell our friends about. So when it comes to choosing where to receive medical care, most of us rely on exactly that kind of word of mouth. We trust a familiar name or a recommendation from a neighbor. We don't always have someone or a trustworthy enough source to get that word-of-mouth information from, though. What do you do in that situation? Well, what if there was a way to know, by the objective numbers, that the care you will receive is actually good?
That's exactly what federal hospital ratings are designed to tell you. And right here in our community, White Mountain Regional Medical Center has just been confirmed as one of the best.
Understanding How Hospitals Are Rated
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) evaluates hospitals across the country using a standardized patient survey called HCAHPS, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems. After discharge, patients are asked to rate their experience across several areas of care. One of the most meaningful measures is Nurse Communication: Did your nurses listen carefully? Did they explain things in a way you understood? Did they treat you with courtesy and respect?
What makes this rating particularly meaningful is how strict it is. According to HCAHPS On-Line, the official HCAHPS website, survey results are publicly reported in three categories: "top-box," "middle-box," and "bottom-box." For Nurse Communication, the top-box response, the only one that counts toward a five-star rating, is "Always." A response of "Usually" is classified as middle-box, and "Sometimes or Never" falls to the bottom. In other words, a patient who felt their nurse usually communicated well earns the hospital zero top-box credit. Only "Always" counts. It is an uncompromising standard that demands consistent, genuine excellence in every single patient interaction.
WMRMC: 1 of Only 7 in Arizona
Using this rigorous CMS data, Becker's Hospital Review evaluated hospitals across the nation. White Mountain Regional Medical Center earned a five-star rating for Nurse Communication, placing us among only 7 hospitals in the entire state of Arizona to achieve this distinction. This is a patient-reported confirmation that our nurses are truly exceptional at what they do.
Great nursing is just one part of what we offer. WMRMC provides a full range of specialty and primary care services, right here in the White Mountains.

What This Means for You
Nurse communication isn't just a feel-good metric. It is directly tied to your safety, your recovery, and your peace of mind. When nurses listen carefully and explain care clearly, patients leave better prepared, feel less anxious during their stay, and experience better outcomes overall.
For our community, this recognition means you don't have to travel hours to access top-tier care. We are extraordinarily proud of our nursing team, and we are grateful to every patient who took the time to share their experience.
